Pipes, taps and water

To report a repair:

What is the problem?

Water leaking

Is it cold or hot water?

Where is it coming from, for example, a hole in the roof, the flat above, the hot-water cylinder, the cold-water storage tank, pipes or radiator?

If from the flat above, contact the occupant to try and stop the leak.

Are electrical fittings getting wet? If so, turn off the electricity at the consumer unit. See Resetting a trip switch.

Burst pipe

Where is the burst? Is it hot or cold water? Turn off the water at the stop tap and open all taps.

Overflow running

Is the flow coming from the toilet, water tank or boiler?

If the toilet, have you tried to adjust the ball valve? See Adjusting a toilet ball valve.

Is it dripping, running or gushing?

Tap dripping or faulty

Is it on the bath, basin or sink? What type of tap is it? Is it a hot or cold tap?

What is the problem, for example, is it dripping, stuck on or off, or has the top come off?

No hot water

Is there no water at all? See No water supply below.

If there is water but it is not hot, see Heating and hot water.

No water supply or low pressure

Are other properties in the area affected? If so, ring your water supply company. See Useful contact numbers.

Is there any water flowing from the hot taps? If not, turn off the water heater.

Is the stop tap jammed? Are you getting cold water in the kitchen?

Is it causing any other problems or damage?
