Heating and hot water

To report a repair:

What is the problem?

Smell of gas or fumes

Where is the smell coming from? Is it from a gas leak or has the gas been left on unlit or has a pilot light gone out? Ring National Grid (Gas) immediately on 0800 111999 from outside your home (using a phone inside, even a mobile, could spark an explosion).

Smoke coming into a room

Do you have a gas, oil or solid-fuel fire?

If you can smell gas or fumes, see Smell of gas or fumes above.

If you use a wood or coal fire, has the chimney been swept? You are responsible for getting this done at least once a year.

Central heating not working

Is the timer or programmer set correctly? Check in your instruction leaflet. You may need to reset the timer after a power cut.

Is it gas, electric, solid-fuel, oil or part solar heating?

Is it a shared heating system? If gas or electric, has your meter credit run out? (If we have to come and restart your system because your meter has run out, we will charge you the cost of the visit.)

Are you getting any heat at all? Are you getting hot water?

Fire or heater not working

Did you have it installed? If so, you are responsible for any repair. What type of heater is it, for example, gas convector heater or fire, or electric convector heater, bar fire or fan heater?

Radiator not getting warm

Is the boiler working? Are other radiators working? See Central heating above. If only one radiator, is the thermostatic valve set correctly? Is the room temperature satisfactory?

Have you tried to bleed the radiator? See Bleeding a radiator.

Radiator leaking

Are electric fittings getting wet? Turn off the electricity at the consumer unit. Is it leaking from a joint valve or a hole?

No hot water or the hot-water heater is faulty

Is there any water flowing from your hot taps? If not, turn off the water heater. What type of heater is it, for example, central-heating boiler, gas water heater or electric immersion heater?

Other problems with heating or hot water

What is the problem? Do you know what is causing it?

Is it causing any other problems or damage?
